. 2025-08-12
In the interview, published today in the "Portrait” section, Gonçalo Regalado emphasized the strategic vision of positioning BPF as the Sovereign Bank of Portugal, focusing on companies and entrepreneurs: agile, close, efficient, delivering impactful results with immediate economic effects.
"The focus is on companies and entrepreneurs. We work for them. From morning to night. The entrepreneur is the Holy Grail of the Bank; they come first," he stated.
Highlighting the role of the Sovereign Bank of Portugal as a driver of investment serving the country and the economy, he revealed that €2.75 billion in guarantees had been produced up to August.
He added, "If the Portuguese Development Bank produces, as we expect, in partnership with commercial banks, €4.7 billion in guarantees—excluding the Covid year, when €9.1 billion were produced—the Portuguese Development Bank will have its best year in the last 15."
Key messages highlighted by the CEO in the interview:
- The challenge of leading the Sovereign Bank
"You need to be at service and present even when it is difficult because our private, personal, and family life does not always accommodate it."
- Remarkable results and immediate impact serving companies
"The main indicators by which the bank should be evaluated are investment, growth, development, exports, and employment."
- Active proximity to companies, with an intense agenda of daily visits
"I feel great when I am with entrepreneurs."
- Importance of the Sovereign Bank’s independence
"Because a sovereign bank cannot be a subservient bank," he warns. "The Development Bank cannot be subservient to commercial banks, investment and capital funds, Banco de Portugal or the Central Bank, nor to auditors, reviewers, or regulators."
- Cultural and operational transformation and a team-oriented work culture
Working with "the home team."
- Commitment to public service and economic impact
"Being president of the Development Bank is being president of the Nation’s Bank, being president of the Sovereign Bank of Portugal."
